Old Reid Park and Kirby Preserve
Night-O and Search & Destroy-O

June 25, 2022

Meet Director: Sharon Bond

It was a hot and humid night when 23 people came out to compete in our Summer Solstice celebration Night-O and Search-and-Destroy-O. We partnered again with the National Trails Parks and Recreation District to put on the event.

The rules were simple: a mass start at 9:30pm, with 1 hour to punch as many controls (out of 20) as you cared to find. We need to get a new air horn, so instead we yelled "GO!". Each control returned was worth 1 point.

5 of the controls also used the white controls stands, and each stand was worth 1 point on Search-and-Destroy-O.

The challenge control this year was #12 (worth 2 points). However, what we didn't realize is that the challenge was going to be a confrontation wiht a park neighbor who alternately threatened to shoot people for being at the control (which is on park property) or calling the police. No shots were fired and no police were involved, but the park district will be sending another letter.

Thanks to Matt Bond for help field checking and setting controls. Many thanks to Penny Dunbar from the park district, who seem to know most of the registrants personnally and made registration go that much faster.
